Tulkinnanvaraista* is a brand new recital series in Helsinki, presenting works by living composers, with a leaning towards various experimental practises such as microtonality, electronics, improvisation and performance art. Another emphasis is on composers who perform their own music.

We do not like to make rigid distinctions between genres. Therefore on the same night you may hear a freely improvised saxophone solo and a post-serial composition for piano. In the same manner a minimalistic shimmer might in the next moment turn into a theatrical expression of love’s painfulness.

Starting in October, about once a month we present a concert with two different acts at G18 (address: Yrjönkatu 18, Helsinki). Some of the performers of this first season 2011–12 are locally based but appear in slightly unusual contexts, others we proudly present on their first visit to Finland. No less than ten premieres will be heard.

We wish you warm welcome to find new experiences, to enjoy and to be surprised!

* The name of the series is a pun of sorts: literally “tulkinnanvaraista” means “dependent on an interpretation”, which reflects our thinking of music as a communal activity. Everybody – composer, performer and listener alike – is an interpreter. “Tulkinnanvaraista” also means “debatable”. We acknowledge that this music is not everyone’s primary cup of tea and may evoke fundamental questions about the purpose and content of art. Which is a good thing!
